The Effectiveness of Modeling on Oral Shape Imitations in a Child with Autism
Hong Ee-Rea

Lund Emily M.
Abstract
In this study, a three-year old boy with autism and complex communication needs was taught oral vowel shapes using in-vivo modeling with exaggerated mouth movements. A multiple baseline design across behaviors (three vowels) was used. The number of the child¡¯s oral imitation initiations was recorded. Also the child¡¯s challenging behaviors during session were recorded as were his absences during the intervention period. Both visual and statistical analyses were obtained and interpreted. Results indicated that the intervention generally had a moderate to large effect on oral shape imitation and that challenging behavior during intervention sessions also decreased over the course of the study.
